BRC Group Holdings is acquiring Sangoma for $204 million. This marks a massive shift for the #VoIP space, and my immediate concern is the future of #Asterisk and #FreePBX.
These projects built the foundation for modern open-source telephony. When a holding company buys the primary steward of an open-source project, the community usually pays the tab. The focus historically shifts from open development to squeezing margins on existing deployments. This pattern leads to restricted access, closed codebases, and ignored bug reports for anyone without a premium support contract.
If BRC locks down core Asterisk components or forces FreePBX into a closed model to feed their telecom portfolio, thousands of operators will face sudden, expensive migrations.
Time will tell.
